Uganda's District 9200

District 6970 and District 9200 are participating in our first Future Visions Vocational Training Team (VTT) Program. District 6970 is hosting a VTT from Uganda during the months of April and May for 30 days just in time for our May 6-8 District Conference.

Our District will send a VTT to Uganda in March and April for 30 days to coincide with a medical camp and their District Conference that is planned for April. The focus at this time is tentative but the plan is to have a focus of Disease Prevention and Treatment together with Maternal and Child Health.

Qualified candidates, with at least two years of work experiencein the area of focus, will have skills in the medical field. Once District 6970 receives more information about the medical camp and VTT focus we will post more information on the website.

District 9200 comprises the five East African countries Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The geographical variation ranges from beautiful coastal beaches (both in Kenya and Tanzania), to Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and Lake Victoria, the largest fresh water lake in Africa. The Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo - still roam our vast savannahs and bush land.

Uganda MapThe equator passes through Kenya and Uganda. The total population of all five countries is about 130 million in an area of 3,139,000 sq kms. Uganda’s population is estimated at 28.25 millions with a population growth of 3.4% and a total fertility rate of about 6.7 children per woman in 2006. Around 78% of the population lives in the rural areas. GDP percapita is still low at US$270. Average inflation rate has been below 5 percent. The country has achieved an economic growth of 5.5%. The proportion of the population living below the poverty line declined from 38 percent in 2004 to 31 percent in the 2006. Northern Uganda, afflicted by conflict over the past 19 years remains the poorest region with 61% of the population living below the poverty line.

While peace talks progressed significantly, this region still experiences a humanitarian crisis with about 1.6 million people living in Internally Displaced Populations (IDP) camps in 5 districts. The burden of disease remains predominantly communicable diseases although there is also a growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) including mental health disorders. Maternal and perinatal conditions also contribute to the high mortality. Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD’s) remain a big problem in the country affecting mainly rural poor communities.
