Rotary World Peace Fellowships
Promoting Peace through International Study and Contact
Rotary promotes peace and world understanding through several educational programs. In addition to its oldest scholarships program and its professional exchanges, Rotary offers support in two programs specifically designed to equip future peacemakers in the practice of peace. They are the Rotary World Peace Fellowships and the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program.
ROTARY WORLD PEACE FELLOWSHIPS
The Rotary Foundation is pleased to announce the integration of its peace education initiatives. Rotary’s World Peace Fellowships for master’s degree and professional development certificate study have been consolidated into one program. This change allows applicants to apply simultaneously for both options by including all seven Rotary Centers below in their preferred options:
- Rotary Center at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand (professional development certificate)
- Rotary Center at Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA (master’s degree)
- Rotary Center at International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan (master’s degree)
- Rotary Center at Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina (master’s degree)
- Rotary Center at the University of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England (master’s degree)
- Rotary Center at the University of California, Berkeley, USA (master’s degree program)
- Rotary Center at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia (master’s degree)
Part of this integration is the adjustment of the
application and selection schedule for the professional development
option. The Rotary Center at Chulalongkorn University will continue
to offer two sessions of training each year from January-April and
June-August. Applications for both sessions will now be due at the
same time as applications for the master’s degree option on 1 July
with selection taking place one time each year for the master’s
degree fellows as well as both sessions of professional development
fellows. More integration news will be released as it becomes
available, along with new application forms and promotional
materials.
Applicants should continue to use existing application
forms until these new items are finalized.

Applications are accepted here in Northeast Florida from January until early March each year for Rotary Peace Fellowships and for the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program, by Rotary clubs in District 6970-which includes Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Union, and Volusia counties. These awards are for the period July 2009 - June 2010. Applications must be made through a Rotary club in the area of the applicant's legal or permanent residence or place of full-time study or employment. Persons with disabilities and members of Rotaract clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
The following are ineligible for Rotary World Peace Fellowships: Rotarians, Honorary Rotarians Employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International Spouses, lineal descendants (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of any living person in the categories a) or b) above; former Rotarians and their relatives as described above within 36 months of resignation. All others meeting the criteria of level of education and work experience described by The Rotary Foundation are welcome to apply.
Application and Selection
The Fellowship application and selection process consists of three levels: local club, local district, and world. Because application deadlines vary by club and district, applicants must contact their local clubs and districts for specific information on deadlines. Club deadlines should be in March also with the Ambassadorial Scholarships. (See the Timetable for Ambassadorial Scholarships under the Foundation Scholarship link at www.rotary6970.org).
Club Level
Interested applicants can then contact a club in their region within the district. The club will assign a sponsor to each applicant with whose advice they prepare the application, and submit the completed application to a local Rotary club. See below for names and contact information.
District Level
Individual Rotary clubs conduct initial screening and select Fellowship applications to be forwarded up channels with the Ambassadorial Scholarship application to the district level for competitive interviews. While there is no limit to the number of applications an individual Rotary club may forward, each Rotary district may submit only one candidate to be considered in the world-wide competition. All districts are encouraged to recruit qualified candidates in their area to apply for the Fellowship.
World Level
Each Rotary district will submit its candidate's application to The Rotary Foundation on or before July 1. The world-wide competition selection committee will consist of Trustee-appointed Rotarians and representatives from the University Partners. The Rotary Foundation will inform candidates and districts about final selection decisions in December.
District 6970: The Crown District
Applicants should plan to be physically present at the following events:
- Club Interview - ask your sponsor counselor
- Region Interview - ask your sponsor counselor
- District Interviews - see the timeline on this website
- Orientation program in late June in Florida prior to departure
Applicants are strongly encouraged to read all materials carefully before filling out the application.
Peace Fellow Awards: Rotarians please note that the Peace Fellow awards are not funded in the same way as the other educational awards. We need not have earmarked DDS funds for the District candidate to be submitted and perhaps selected. So, a Peace Fellow award is essentially free to the District if the applicant is selected by the TRF panel.
Contact
If you believe you qualify and are interested, contact a Rotarian in your region. Interested Rotarians and/or their club's Scholarship Committee members are able to assist applicants in their respective geographic areas within the district. The club will assign a sponsor or counselor to provide help and direction to each applicant. (See a list of Rotary clubs in this district at www.rotary6970.org.)
